Senior Web Developer at CPO Commerce

Located in California, USA. Posted April 30, 2009

It’s time to add another web applications ‘heavyweight’ to our team. We’ve been growing at an incredible rate (nearly doubling in sales each year) and our technology team has been successful in keeping us moving forward, but we really haven’t been keeping up with the technologies to keep us on the leading edge as we move forward. So this is where you’d come in if you were the person that lands this job. Put on your favorite ‘thinking cap’ because you’re going to be called on for all the brain power you have…

This position is all about modernizing some pretty awesome eCommerce systems. You’ll be on the team that will be responsible for the analysis, design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance of software applications and interfaces between current and future systems. You’ll have some very smart and ambitious coders on your team and you’ll be able to keep this a fast paced environment where you can count on people to do the right thing.

What’s the day to day responsibilities?

Take on software projects.

Maintain a good system to develop and document your projects.

Work in all aspects of the development process, including design and testing.

Be the subject matter expert and contribute your expertise as needed.

Review all current operational data structures and recommend optimizations and reconfigurations as warranted.

Work with clients, business analysts, technical staff, and project team members to plan, design, develop, implement, and enhance applications

Document technical specifications

With minimal direction, prepare detailed design specifications for programs and operations.

As you can see – this is not just about being a good coder. You really need to have built your career to this point by also being good at creating the process and leading others to follow it.

Why would someone want this job?

Short answer is this: Working with really talented people in a company that is financially stable and growing (even in this economy).

Long Explanation to the short answer: We’re out of the startup stage and we came out of it like a lion! Every year since we started – the company revenues have more than doubled except this year – when we had a meager 40% growth. So now it’s time to take our technology platforms to the next level. Couple the fact that we are only looking for real talent and the growth we’ve experienced – you’ll be working with people that can keep this company sailing through rough waters or tough times. (Hey I used a sailing analogy! Maybe I’m starting to veer off course)

How to be considered:

Well, start with sending me your resume by email (job+215@railsjobs.in) and include a cover letter telling me the best ways and best time to contact you. In your cover letter include answers to these questions:

Why are you uniquely qualified for this position?

What have you done in your career that is noteworthy?

Have you ever received an award or accommodation for your work? Tell me about it.

After I’ve reviewed your resume and cover letter - I will contact you to either set up an initial interview or tell you why I don’t think you’re qualified for the position. I will get back to you one way or the other because I firmly believe that you deserve prompt consideration and to know the results.

There – that’s my description of this job. Now I can go back to dreaming about sailing for a bit (before my email box beckons me).

Required Skills:

What are the qualifications?

Well, you certainly will be called on to be a great coder. And you’ll have to be packing a pertinent degree. (CS or an Engineering degree should cover it.) And then there’s the long list of technologies that you should have worked with by now: So, 3-5 years with the common technologies such as PERL, Java, JavaScript, etc. Preference would be given to someone that was ‘off the hook’ talented with Ruby on Rails – but it’s not the end of the World if you’re making web applications in some other platform perform awesomely. I have a long list of technologies that most recruiters would throw down here – but I’m not big on the buzzword list – so we’ll go over the technologies in detail when we talk.

Desired skills:

Ruby on Rails
